The 2012 Rugby Evening Classic was held 16 - 20 April at Rugby LTC. 109 entries were received in 12 different events with players of all ages travelling from Surrey, Essex, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire , Staffordshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire to join Warwickshire players to compete in this LTA approved Grade 4 tournament. 53 players from Rugby competed well and with great enthusiasm to help ensure a successful event and some great tennis; indeed half of the events were won by Rugby members.
In the 8&U Boys the winner was William Garthwaite and the runner-up Zachary Wenham. Charlotte Eaton also won all her matches to take the 8&U Girls trophy with Lucia Bell in 2nd place. Oscar Holmes from Leicestershire won the 9&U Boys title with Matthew Irish runner-up. The 9&U Girls event was won by Grace Leigh from Essex who beat Amelia Fenwick in the final.
Ben Stuchbury played a great match to beat Ben Porter from Derbyshire in the final of the 10&U Boys and take the trophy. The 10&U Girls was also won by a local player, Minnie Sprayson, who topped the table ahead of Francesca Hurley in a closely fought round robin. Alex Maggs from Hereford & Worcester lost only 5 games in winning the 12&U Boys title, beating Richard Harrison in the final. Peter Strange won the consolation final.
The 12&U Girls was won by Mhari Tyler from Kenilworth with Maya Sargent runner up. and Rose Thomas from Lincolnshire winning the consolation final from Estella Haynes. Mhari Tyler was also in the final of the Girls 14&U where she lost in a closely fought three set match to Elizabeth Massie. Amelia Tarrant was third. Freddie Grant from Surrey won the 14&U Boys final beating Reece Benton from Staffordshire in another competitive three set final. Sam Millard from Staffordshire won the consolation event.
The Women's Singles final also produced a great three set final with Rugby LTC 1st team players Rachael Baker and Rebecca Thomas both powering their drives down the lines. Rachael came out on top eventually winning the match tie break third set by 11-9. Gemma Trodd was third. Martin McNally was beaten by Philip Stacey from Leicestershire in the Men's Singles Final with Gareth Davies taking the consolation final from David Heathcote.
